Chinese company 01.AI, led by computer scientist Kai-Fu Lee, aims to develop a large language model (LLM) tailored to the Chinese market. Launched in March 2023, the company addresses the absence of OpenAI and Google products in China, presenting a necessity for homegrown solutions. Within seven months of incorporation, 01.AI introduced its first model, the open-source Yi-34B, with 34 billion parameters available in English and Chinese. The company also offers another open-source model with six billion parameters named “Yi-6B.” These models are available on Hugging Face, ModelScope, and Github.
As reported in November 2023, the company was working on a proprietary 100-billion parameter model to move its strategy beyond open-source offerings.
In May 2024, 01.AI released Yi-Large, a close sourced model along with six performance-oriented model APIs for Yi-Large including Yi-Large API (optimized for text generation and inference performance), Yi-Large-Turbo API (balanced for high-precision inferences and text generation), Yi-Medium API (tailored for instruction-following capabilities), Yi-Medium-200K API (able to process 200,000 words of text at once), Yi-Vision API (Capable of image understanding and analysis) , and Yi-Spark API (lightweight and ultra-fast response).
In November 2024, the company partnered with Huawei to jointly develop Ascend-native AI models and applications for various industries.
