Forest-Wool is a Dutch startup that converts pine needle slush into fiber, yarn, and textiles. The company uses a refined “retting” process (using moisture and microorganisms to dissolve undesirable parts of the plant) to convert waste pine needles, as well as techniques to extract essential oils and natural dyes from the needles. While the company’s focus is on developing fibers and textiles, its technology can also be used to produce soft or hard material, making it suitable for construction applications, such as a substitute for glass and carbon fiber composites.
Forest-Wool claims its fiber is much more sustainable compared to cotton as it uses an off-seasonal byproduct of the logging industry and does not require agricultural land, water, or pesticides. The company sources its pine needles from the Dutch timber industry as of May 2020, and hopes to expand sourcing to other European countries once it has refined its technology.
The company has not commercialized its product as of January 2024.
