Terran Orbital is a manufacturer of satellite products that provides end-to-end satellite solutions by combining satellite design, production, launch planning, mission operations, and on-orbit support. It primarily serves the aerospace and defense industries.

Terran Orbital offers a range of seven standard satellite buses, ranging from “nano”- to “small”-size satellite classes, built using a modular approach. Launched in September 2023, these modular buses feature interchangeable components and can be configured for diverse applications across civil, commercial, and defense sectors. Its largest enterprise-class spacecraft platform can carry up to 24 satellites per launch at its advanced manufacturing facility. The firm claims by using common components, it achieves efficient building and testing processes. Its flexible architecture and automated production and testing ensure fast delivery times for single and constellation orders, maintaining high quality and minimizing risk.

In March 2024, the company launched SmallSat GEO, which provides cost-effective small-satellite solutions to geostationary orbit and claims to offer a safer alternative to traditional large GEO missions. With much shorter lead times and costs reduced by 10x–15x, it allows for more flexible and dynamic operations.

Key customers and partnerships

In May 2024, Terran Orbital secured a new contract from Lockheed Martin to purchase 18 satellite buses. Lockheed Martin will use the satellite buses to produce 18 satellites for the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer contract.

Terran Orbital has collaborated with NASA on multiple missions, including the CPOD nano-satellite docking demonstration, Pathfinder Technology Demonstrator (PTD) 3, and the RainCube radar satellite for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

In June 2023, Terran Orbital partnered with ImageSat International to make final preparations for launching the Runner 1 FASat-Delta Earth observation satellite, which will collect and monitor data.
