Twiliner is a Swiss startup that aims to provide an eco-friendly and comfortable alternative to low-cost air travel in Europe. The company is developing overnight bus services equipped with first-class seats typically found in aircraft cabins. These seats feature fully reclining backrests, allowing passengers to lie flat for a comfortable sleeping experience during their journey. Twiliner plans to operate its buses on routes between 800 and 1,200 kilometers, with ticket prices ranging from 180 to 220 euros. The buses will be powered by biodiesel from Switzerland, contributing to sustainable transportation.
Ensuring passenger safety while in the lying position has been a key challenge for Twiliner. The startup has been collaborating with DTC AG, an accredited vehicle safety testing center in Switzerland, to test and validate the security of its reclining seat systems. Computer simulations have already been conducted successfully, and crash tests with dummies are scheduled for the summer of 2024.
Twiliner aims to launch its first overnight service from Zurich to Barcelona in 2024, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. The startup positions its offering as complementary to the existing rail network, targeting routes without existing overnight train connections.
