Oriole Networks, a University College London (UCL) spinout, is a photonic networking startup that utilizes light to connect thousands of AI graphics processing units (GPUs) directly. This approach forms a "super-brain,” claimed to be capable of training LLMs up to 100x faster, consuming only a fraction of the power and reducing latency by a 1,000x. The solution seeks to address the critical issue of unsustainable power consumption and systemic bottlenecks faced by data centers due to the exponential growth of AI computational demands. Other applications of its tech include improving time-critical tasks like algorithmic trading and pioneering the use of optical switching to create the fastest and most energy-efficient network. This innovative approach is accelerating the next generation of machine learning in high-performance computers and data centers, promising exciting possibilities for the future.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2024, EnSilica, a chip maker of mixed signal ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) was designated as the company’s ASICs partner. Further, EnSilica was awarded a contract for the design and supply of Oriole's Photonics Controller ASICs to be used in its optical network switch.
