Phase3D (formerly Additive Monitoring Systems) offers a real-time additive manufacturing quality inspection platform called Fringe Research for powder-based additive manufacturing processes. The platform uses structured light technology to measure and monitor each layer of a 3D print at the micron level during manufacture. By measuring the height of powder and melted layers, it automatically identifies anomalies and defects that can lead to part failures. Users can identify the root cause of production failures, remotely monitor operations, and decrease the throughput of defective parts.

In March 2024, the company launched True Layer Thickness, a toolkit that allows users to measure the quantity of metal powder distributed across a 3D printer's build platform for even material distribution during the powder bed fusion process.

In November 2024, the company launched Fringe Qualification, an addition to its Fringe Inspection product suite. The system integrates with Phase3D's existing Fringe Operator visualization and inspection software to allow for real-time inspection across multiple machines, automated quality checks using historical build data, instant out-of-specification alerts, and detailed build reports. It uses structured light fringe projection technology to create micron-level heightmaps of each layer for real-time decision-making.

Key customers and partnerships

Phase3D has established significant partnerships with major aerospace and research institutions such as NASA and the US Air Force. It also partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in December 2022 to investigate the ballistic effect of binder deposition during binder jetting AM and to develop new methods to improve efficiency and again in August 2024 to adapt its monitoring system for inspecting molybdenum additive manufacturing for nuclear applications.

In March 2023, the company partnered with Materialise, a provider of 3D printing software and services, to integrate Project Fringe into the latter’s Process Control software solution.
