Bioform Technologies is a Canadian startup that develops sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. The company utilizes a proprietary technology to manufacture wood pulp-reinforced hydrogels at speed and scale. The company’s products include thermoformable films for producing rigid packaging and compostable heat-sealable films for pouches, agricultural applications, and garbage bags. Bioform repurposes existing pulp and paper-making machinery to manufacture its films at scale. The company also claims that existing heat sealing infrastructure requires minimal modification to accept its bio-based film in place of conventional plastic film.
The company claims its products have the potential to offer a carbon footprint that is 20% lower than conventional single-use plastics while offering tensile strength and oxygen or water vapour permeability characteristics similar to conventional plastics. Additionally, its products can be home-composted or recycled through existing paper recycling processes.
Bioform was yet to commercialize its technology as of May 2024.
Funding and financials
In April 2024, the company raised USD 5 million from Suzano Ventures to accelerate product development.
