Radiant Matter is a UK-based startup that produces bio-based alternatives for petroleum-based shimmer and color effects, with applications spanning textiles, cosmetics, coatings, packaging, and the automotive industry.
The company’s first solution targets embellishments and surface coatings in the fashion industry, with the patent pending “BioSequin.” Made using plant-based cellulose, it is designed to be a replacement for conventional sequins made of polyester film (Mylar) or vinyl (PVC). Radiant Matter’s technology leverages a form of structural color that uses cellulose nanocrystals to form tiny complex structures to reflect light, similar to the iridescence in peacock feathers and shells of beetles.
The company claims the BioSequins offer non-toxic, colorfast and pigment free palettes, while even their metallic hues are free from minerals and metals.
Key customers and partnerships
In March 2023, the company partnered with Stella McCartney to launch a jumpsuit that incorporates BioSequins. As of May 2024, Radiant Matter has also collaborated with Italian women’s fashion brand Pinko and fashion accessory company BEEN London.
Funding and financials
In May 2024, the company raised ~USD 1.5 million in a Seed Funding round led by Sustainable Ventures, to support the company’s expansion and R&D efforts.
