Based in the UK, Granola develops an AI-powered notepad app to assist users in taking meeting notes. The app combines the user's own notes with those generated by AI based on a transcript of the meeting. Unlike other AI transcription apps that attempt to summarize key points independently, Granola takes a collaborative approach, allowing users to guide the AI by writing down important takeaways, and the AI then fills in the details. Granola utilizes OpenAI's GPT-4o model.

The app works by connecting to the user's calendar and transcribing audio directly from the Mac. It supports platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, Slack, and WebEx. During the meeting, users can type their own notes, or leave it entirely to the AI. Granola analyzes factors such as attendees, their roles, and the meeting's purpose, like a sales call, job interview, or investor pitch. After the meeting, Granola augments the user's notes with additional information, referencing the transcript. It expands on brief notes, corrects typos, and capitalizes text.
