Native Traits is an agricultural biotech company that develops corn varieties using ancestral corn strains. The corn hybrids developed will be able to tolerate drought, temperature variations, diseases, insects, and weeds, avoiding the use of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.
The company’s proprietary NT RECOVERY technology screens seed bank strains, including Indian corn and other ancestral strains, to identify yield and stress tolerance traits. It then uses molecular markers to track the trait and genetically transfer it to a commercial line of corn crops.
Native Traits' product portfolio includes the EaSY trait, the ExSelerate trait, the EaSY 2.0 traits, and the AgResilient hybrid brand. The EaSY comes from Latin American corn varieties and is drought and heat-tolerant. EaSY has demonstrated a corn hybrid yield of over 20 bushels per acre compared with GMO-type corn varieties. The ExSelerate is from a corn variety grown in the Appalachian Mountains and therefore is tolerant to cold climates. These two traits will be marketed together.
The company is also developing the AgResilient brand for corn hybrids with one or more naturally occurring genetic traits. The EaSY 2.0, also in development with expected production in 2024 is a series of corn traits that will be integrated into the AgResilient brand.
