UK-based Freeaim Technologies develops VR shoes that allow users to walk naturally in VR while safely remaining within a small play area. The wireless, battery-powered shoes feature omnidirectional motors and wheels that counteract the user's movements, enabling continuous locomotion in any direction. Freeaim's VR shoes support walking, turning, jogging, sidestepping, and crouching, with plans to incorporate sprinting, jumping, and strafing in the future. The shoes are designed to accommodate users weighing up to 120 kg (~264 lbs). As of June 2024, the shoes were compatible with SteamVR games, with plans to support Meta Quest and PS VR titles. The company planned for a full consumer-level release in 2025.
Further, the company launched its VR Shoes developer kit in June 2024, priced at USD 5,000. The devkit offers an SDK allowing for the use of event-triggered and terrain-based haptic feedback and kinetic feedback, such as walking on lava, water, grass, or snow. This is facilitated via a Bluetooth signal to the user's computer. It also had plans to facilitate the signals between the shoes and stand-alone headsets.
