Coinme is a licensed cryptocurrency cash exchange platform operating in the US since 2014. The company enables users to purchase and sell cryptocurrencies instantly using cash at over 21,000 physical locations across 48 states as of April 2022. Coinme partners with Coinstar, a network of coin-counting kiosks typically located in grocery stores, and MoneyGram, a cross-border remittance service provider, to offer cash-to-crypto services.
Through Coinme-enabled Coinstar kiosks, users can deposit up to USD 2,500 in cash and receive a code to redeem bitcoin or other supported cryptocurrencies like Chainlink, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Lumens, and Polygon on their Coinme account. With MoneyGram, users can hand over or receive cash in exchange for cryptocurrencies by providing instructions to the teller.
Coinme prioritizes simplicity, affordability, and accessibility for its customers. Purchased cryptocurrencies are instantly available in the user's Coinme wallet, eliminating the need for separate wallet setup. Transaction fees range from 4% to 7% at Coinstar kiosks and a flat USD 2.75 plus up to 4% at MoneyGram locations.
In January 2022, MoneyGram announced a strategic minority investment of around 4% ownership stake in Coinme, strengthening their partnership. In August 2022, Coinme expanded its offerings beyond bitcoin at Coinstar kiosks, enabling cash purchases of Chainlink, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Lumens, and Polygon.
