Octopus Energy is a UK gas and electricity retailer specializing in sustainable energy. Octopus does not generate gas or electricity but instead purchases them off the wholesale market and distributes them to retail customers. As of November 2020, Octopus Energy had around 1.7 million retail customers in the UK. Octopus Energy claims that all of its gas and electricity supply comes from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biofuel.

In November 2020, Octopus Energy acquired Upside Energy, a UK startup specializing in the development of cloud-based energy optimization and management solutions. The acquisition is expected to enhance the artificial intelligence and data science capabilities of Octopus Energy’s retail offering by allowing its users to automatically manage devices to match real-time energy demand and supply.
