Based in Norway, Norsk Titanium offers on-demand metal additive manufacturing (AM) solutions targeting aerospace, defense, and space. The company uses its patented technology Rapid Plasma Deposition to process melting titanium wire in a highly supervised argon gas environment. The melted solution is then built up in layers into a shape close to the final product, following which the component is machined for the final touches. This method of production gives metal components strength and durability while reducing materials wastage. The company claims that its tech is capable of printing parts 50x–100x faster compared with powder-based AM systems. In 2017, Norsk Titanium became the world’s first US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-approved titanium 3D printing manufacturer.
One Norsk 3D printer is capable of printing 20 tonnes of titanium parts annually and, as of January 2024, the company operated 35 RPD machines in the US and Norway with an annual capacity of 700 tonnes.
