Based in France, Uzer manufactures a barcode scanner device called Eugene, which scans the barcode of the waste product and identifies if the product is recyclable. The product comes in a compatible size and can easily be installed and used by businesses and households. Eugene is also supported by an app that tracks what users have thrown, shows them their shopping habits, and allows them to create a shopping list. Founded in 2014, the company expects to deploy its device in French cities and gradually expand across Europe.
Uzer claims that its device has a database of more than 500,000 products and recognizes 90% of the products scanned and provides recycling instructions for 75% of them. Uzer’s sorting solution is provided on a subscription basis. The subscription rate depends on the number of Eugene devices installed. A basic annual subscription fee of EUR 2,500 is charged for a package, which includes device personalization, maintenance, support, and back-office services.
