Woodoo is a French startup that converts wood into luxury material. Woodoo’s proprietary engineering platform converts low-grade and diseased wood products into premium, high-tech materials. This transformation occurs at the molecular level through a process called “lignin engineering.” After five years of research and development and filing for 50 patents, Woodo has developed three key augmented wood products: Slim, Flow, and Solid. Slim is a touch-sensitive wood panel that is 3x lighter and emits 7x less carbon than glass. The materials can be used for wood-based smart surfaces specifically for use in the automotive industry. Flow is a bio-based leather product that has a 30x less carbon footprint than animal leather for use across various industries. Solid is a building material that can replace steel and concrete in terms of strength, weight, appearance, and price.
Woodoo notes that it has two industrial sites: the first one is near Troyes in Europe, along with a new 14,000-sq m manufacturing site to meet the increasing demand for its technology.
Key customers and partnerships
The company notes that its technology has attracted interest from top customers in the automotive, luxury, and construction sectors. The company has partnered with automotive players such as Marquardt, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and BHTC for its slim product. Woodoo has also partnered with Guerlain to use Slim across luxury skin care products.
The company has also partnered with Garnica to integrate Woodoo's technology into Garnica's building products portfolio, providing sustainable and high-performance wood-based materials for builders.
Funding and financials
In April 2023, the company raised USD 31 million in a funding round led by Lowercarbon Capital, with participation from other investors, including One Creation and Purple.
