Imperfect Food

Imperfect Foods is a B Corp certified company that operates an online grocery delivery platform designed to reduce food waste. The company collects surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away (from farmers, meat producers, grocers) which it redistributes to consumers via app or website. Customers are billed for what they order instead of subscription or service fees. The company has expanded the number of products available in the platform over time to include shelf-stable goods, dairy, meat, seafood (added in 2019) and personal care products (added in 2020). The company is a national full-service grocer with hundreds of items. As of January 2021, the company reported revenue of over USD 500 million from a  subscriber base of over 350,000 customers. As of October 2021,  the brand delivered over 475,000 boxes through the program.

The company reported that average customer order sizes doubled year-over-year and that revenue tripled over 2020. In September 2021, Imperfect Foods partnered with Manhattan Associates (a leading supply chain software vendor) to use its Warehouse Management System (WMS) to streamline its distribution process amidst growing demand. Imperfect Foods expects to implement the “Manhattan Active” WMS at its pilot distribution center in Texas by Q4 2021 and then expand to its five other distribution centers.  Imperfect Foods has also partnered with airlines and movie theaters to purchase excess food.

In January 2021, the company raised USD 95 million in a Series D funding round led by Insight Partners at a reported valuation of nearly USD 700 million. In February 2021, the Series D round was extended by a further USD 15 million.
