Land Life Company

Land Life Company is an Amsterdam-based reforestation company that carries out large-scale reforestation projects through the use of drones, AI, and monitoring applications at each stage of the planting process. The company aimed to restore two billion hectares of degraded land worldwide, without a specified timeline. As of August 2023, Land Life Company operates in over 25 countries, with a strong focus on the US, Spain, and Australia.

The company begins its reforestation process by assessing the land and the ecological situation using drones and information from local communities to develop a planting blueprint. This is then used to map the most optimum planting pattern and species for a favorable impact on the climate. When planting begins, teams are assisted by a GPS-enabled automated planting system for efficiency. The company has a nursery in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas with a production capacity of 100,000 seedlings and a scaling potential of one million plants by 2025.

The company has also developed its own 100% biodegradable “ Cocoon ” to support seedlings through its first year of planting. The cocoon provides water and shelter to stimulate healthy root growth, protecting it from external pests and harsh conditions. This reportedly provides a survival rate of 75%–95%. In 2021, the company also introduced a fixed-wing drone (weighing 7 kg, with a flight distance of 93.2 miles on a single charge) for its operations, for larger projects that require monitoring.

Once Land Life Company plants the saplings, the company uses on-the-ground and remote sensing technologies to track the reforestation process over time. As such, it uses its monitoring app to track the location, species, vigor, and other statistics of the trees. When the trees reach over a meter in height, Land Life Company uses drones and machine-learning algorithms to geolocate the trees and continue monitoring their growth. Then when the trees are five years old, the monitoring is transferred to satellites. The data gathered is stored in the company database for analysis. The company also created a global reforestation dashboard known as “ Gaia ” for its customers to track projects’ progress.

Key customers and partnerships

• In March 2023, Land Life partnered with Incotec, a seed enhancement company, to integrate smart coating technologies on tree seeds. The first coated seeds were aimed to be introduced on various sites in Colorado (US), Victoria (Australia), and Northern Spain.

• In 2020, Land Life Company was chosen as the only private sector company to be a part of the SUPERB consortium , which aims to find systemic solutions for ecosystem restoration in Europe.

• During the same year, the company partnered with Volterra to co-found the Life Terra Initiative, a tree-planting service that offers volunteering opportunities and educates future generations on sustainability.

• In March 2021, Land Life Company partnered with Zalando to plant over 300,000 trees to capture 80,000 tons of CO2.

• In May 2021, Land Life Company partnered with ABN AMRO Clearing on a five-year reforestation program, which includes large-scale tree plantings across the globe.

• In September 2021, the company partnered with Dutch insurance company Achmea to plant approximately one million trees over three years.
