Based in Berlin, Made of Air (MOA) produces sustainable materials to be used as fossil-based thermoplastics replacements using biochar. MOA converts wood waste into biochar using carbon sequestration The wood waste that undergoes this process locks up carbon permanently in the wood to result in a hardened carbon-negative thermoplastic compound. As of October 2021, the company reported having shipped more than 10 tons of its bio-based materials to over four different customers.
The company claims its bio-based plastic materials are of high durability compared to most other bio-based plastic that is produced for one time use in consumer produced goods. The company targets industries such as automotive, textile, furniture, and construction that require materials with a longer lifespan (around 10-30 years).
MOA states that the price of its materials differs based on the use-case, but reports that the materials are relatively high priced due to smaller-scale operation, and the price stands between the prices of fossil-based plastic and traditional bioplastic. As the company scales, MOA expects to reach price parity with fossil-based plastic.
Key customers and partnerships
MOA has partnered with leading brands such as Audi, H&M, and BMW to commercialize its technology as of September 2021; the company reports it is working on securing more partnerships with global brands.
Funding and financials
In October 2021, the company raised EUR 5 million (USD 5.8 million) in a seed funding round led by TD Veen. The company plans to use the funds to expand its production capacity, expecting to bring a new factory online, while scaling its R&D and production team. The company also plans to make its biomass-based thermoplastic material fire resistant and potentially replace other non-structural materials used in building and construction.
