Seismic (known as Superflex up until August 2018) is a spin-off of research and development company SRI International. The company develops apparel fused with robotics to assist users with daily tasks by improving their independent mobility. The company primarily focuses on supporting the elderly, however, its technology could be used in sports and recreational markets as well.
The garments work with flexible electric motors, which helps the wearer with simple tasks such as standing up, walking around, and carrying groceries and laundry, by enhancing core strength in the torso, hips, and legs. Moreover, the clothes function as intelligent powered clothing, as they can detect actions automatically, such as standing up, and provide the necessary power automatically.
The company launched its first collection of powered clothing in September 2018, about a year after it was founded. In January 2019, it entered into four strategic partnerships with companies across the occupational safety, wellness and lifestyle, and healthcare industries, signaling Seismic’s intent to expand across multiple applications in several industries.
