SAI

The Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform (SAI Platform) is a global non-profit organization working to transform the food and drink industry toward more sustainable sourcing and production practices. Founded in 2002 by Nestlé, Unilever and Danone, SAI Platform has grown to over 190 member companies and organizations across the global food and beverage sector. The organization develops programs, tools and frameworks to help drive sustainable and regenerative agriculture practices at scale. SAI Platform's key focus areas include improving soil health, supporting biodiversity, conserving water resources, mitigating climate change impacts, and ensuring the economic viability of farming businesses.

In September 2023, SAI Platform launched its "Regenerating Together" framework, which aims to provide the agriculture industry with a globally aligned approach for transitioning to regenerative practices. The framework was developed in collaboration with farmers, academic institutions, NGOs and member businesses. It identifies four key impact areas - water, soil, biodiversity and climate - and outlines steps for implementation including risk assessment, outcome selection, adoption of practices, and progress monitoring. The framework is designed for practical use at the farm level to drive measurable outcomes in regenerative agriculture.

SAI Platform integrates its frameworks and programs into existing industry solutions like the European Roundtable for Beef Sustainability, Farm Sustainability Assessment, and Sustainable Dairy Partnership. The organization also works to harmonize sustainable sourcing standards across the food and beverage industries to create unified frameworks that can have impact at scale.

Key customers and partnerships

SAI Platform's membership includes many of the world's leading food and beverage companies such as Nestlé, Danone, Unilever, PepsiCo, and over 160 other global organizations. The platform collaborates closely with farmers, suppliers, NGOs, academic institutions and other stakeholders across the agriculture sector.

In July 2022, SAI Platform welcomed the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) as a formal partner. This partnership brings together GRA's research approach backed by government membership with SAI Platform's on-farm and industry supply chain approach. SAI Platform also partners with certification bodies like Rainforest Alliance and works with organizations like the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative to align on common standards.

SAI Platform's frameworks and programs are utilized by major agricultural cooperatives, with over 30 cooperatives committing to the Regenerating Together framework launched in 2023. The organization's tools and resources are designed for use by farmers globally, spanning crops, dairy and beef production.
