FarmBot

FarmBot Inc. is a Californian benefit corporation that operates an open-source precision agriculture project. The enterprise consists of a robot farming machine, software, and documentation customized to suit individual food production needs. FarmBot mainly targets those aiming to grow their own food for research and educational purposes. According to the company, an individual can save around USD 45 per month, or USD 540 per year, by growing their own vegetables with FarmBot Express (a model developed by FarmBot for small-scale use) instead of buying them from a store. The company also operates models called Express XL (USD 1,495) for large-scale feeding, Genesis (USD 3,295), and Genesis XL, which can be used for experimentation, modification, and DIY purposes. These modules are mostly purchased on a preorder basis.

In July 2020, FarmBot expanded its services to Australia by entering into an agreement with Inmarsat, a British satellite telecommunications company offering global mobile services. The partnership aims to deliver a water monitoring software-as-a-service solution for Australian farmers. Inmarsat provides satellite connectivity services to FarmBot, helping Australian farmers in remote locations overcome frequent network connectivity challenges.

FarmBot has also gained increasing recognition in the education sector, where more than 500 educational institutions have integrated the study of FarmBot technology into their curriculum. The company claims to serve customers in more than 75 countries. The development of an open-source system, which allows users to modify or add hardware, software, and documentation, has complemented FarmBot’s rapid growth.
