Based in the UK, Better Origin focuses on upcycling food waste into animal feed. The company offers AI-powered insect mini-farm units that are designed to collect local food waste from supermarkets. The units recreate the conditions found in nature where food waste turns into insects such as black soldier fly larvae. The process takes 7-14 days to grow larvae depending on the type of feed required, with the conversion process being monitored using cameras, sensors, and AI. All features combine to inspect the insects’ health as they become fit to be fed to the farm’s animals. Better Origin has launched one version of its plug-and-play container farm—called the X1—which can produce feed in 1 sqm space that is equivalent to feed produced on 1,500 sqm of soy plantations.
As of October 2024, the company offers its farm on a subscription basis. The subscription fee depends on the size of the system, the size of the farm, and the type of waste used. While currently focused in the UK, Better Origin is also looking to expand internationally to enter Europe. In addition, the company plans to expand its focus beyond poultry to serve other new livestock areas and potentially produce upcycled human food.
Key customers and partnerships
Having commercially launched its business in 2020, by early 2021, Better Origin has five X1 mini-farms in operation and also reported that in December 2021, it signed a deal with Morrisons UK to supply 10 X1 mini-farms to feed chickens at the latter’s egg farms by September 2022. Upon success, the plan is to deploy the X1 at all 60 of Morrisons’ farms.
