Quortus is a software company that offers SoftCore, a virtualized mobile core network solution. SoftCore is designed to run on commodity hardware, allowing operators to deploy core network functionality at the edge, such as macro cells, small cells, and the cloud, at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional proprietary hardware. This edge-based approach helps reduce backhaul costs and improve user experience by handling voice and data requests locally whenever possible.
SoftCore supports LTE, 3G, and 2G technologies simultaneously without the need for virtual machines. It enables caching of frequently accessed local data services like Google Maps, further reducing backhaul requirements. The solution is particularly beneficial for Tier two operators, for whom core network upgrades can be expensive. It also facilitates a hosted core model, where smaller operators and MVNOs can have their core hosted by a third party.
In December 2021, Quortus was acquired by Ericsson through its subsidiary CradlePoint, with the goal of augmenting CradlePoint's engineering talent and targeting new opportunities in enterprise connectivity and security.
