Uhnder is a prominent radar technology company headquartered in Austin, Texas, focused on developing advanced digital imaging radar solutions for the automotive industry. Founded in 2015, Uhnder has pioneered the world's first fully automotive-qualified, 4D digital imaging radar-on-chip. The company's flagship product, the S80 chip, utilizes Digital Code Modulation (DCM) technology to offer superior performance compared to traditional analog radar systems. Uhnder's radar-on-chip provides 16 times better resolution, 24 times more power on target, and 30 times better contrast than conventional analog offerings. This breakthrough technology enables precise detection and tracking of objects, including pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, in various weather and lighting conditions.
Uhnder's digital radar chip features 12 transmitters and 16 receivers, creating 192 virtual radar channels. This configuration allows for improved angular resolution, accuracy, and the ability to detect smaller objects more quickly and precisely. The chip consumes between 7-13 watts, which is claimed to be about half the power of competitive setups. In April 2022, Uhnder released its S80 radar-on-chip to mass production, having completed stringent automotive requirements including AEC-Q104 qualification, ISO 26262 ASIL-B rating, and PPAP. In April 2024, Uhnder introduced the S81 mass market imaging radar solution, designed to make 4D imaging radar technology more accessible for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in a wider range of vehicles.
Key customers and partnerships
Uhnder's technology made its commercial debut in November 2022 through a partnership with Magna International, featuring in the Icon Digital Radar used in the Fisker Ocean electric SUV. The Fisker Ocean incorporates five high-definition digital radars using Uhnder's technology, providing 360-degree coverage with the ability to detect vehicles at 200 meters and pedestrians at 80 meters.
Uhnder has also established strategic collaborations with other companies in the automotive industry. In February 2022, Uhnder announced a partnership with Spartan, a sensor software company, to develop robust, all-weather, high-resolution sensing solutions for ADAS and automated vehicles.
