Heliene Inc. is a North American provider of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. Headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the company has been manufacturing solar modules since 2010. Heliene operates manufacturing facilities in Ontario, Canada, and Mountain Iron, Minnesota, US. The company produces monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar PV modules utilizing anti-reflective solar glass technology, enabling higher energy output during non-peak hours compared to conventional modules.
Heliene's modules meet the requirements for the Buy-American and American Recovery and Reinvestment Acts. In December 2023, the company invested an additional USD 10 million to expand its Mountain Iron facility, doubling the capacity of its Minnesota Line One to 300 megawatts (MW). This line manufactures PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) modules, with plans to transition to TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) technology by February 2024. The expansion created an estimated 130 new jobs in Minnesota's Iron Range region.
In August 2023, Heliene partnered with Nexamp, the largest community solar provider in the US, securing a 1.5 gigawatt (GW) module order to support approximately 400 new community solar projects over five years. The company plans to invest USD 145 million in a new facility in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, with an annual capacity of one GW for modules and 1.5 GW for solar cells, leveraging incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act. Production at this facility is expected to commence in late 2024, creating 470 new jobs.
