Matorka is an Icelandic land-based aquaculture company specializing in the production of premium Arctic char. Founded in 2010 and based in Grindavik, Iceland, Matorka utilizes the country's natural resources to create a sustainable fish farming operation. The company's facility is designed to work in harmony with Iceland's ecosystem, using pristine groundwater naturally filtered through 200,000-year-old lava beds and heated by geothermal energy to maintain a constant water temperature of 10-12°C. This unique environment allows Matorka to raise Arctic char without the need for antibiotics, chemicals, or hormones.
Matorka's production system is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The company uses 100% clean geothermal electricity to power its facilities and employs a gravity-fed water system to minimize energy consumption. The fish are fed a high-quality, sustainable non-GMO diet, and the company maintains a Feed Conversion Ratio of 1:1.2, which is significantly better than traditional livestock farming. As of June 2023, Matorka was harvesting approximately 1,500 metric tons of Arctic char per year, with plans to quadruple its capacity to 6,000 tons annually.
The company is vertically integrated, controlling all aspects of production from egg to fillet export. Matorka's business model includes harvest-to-order practices to ensure maximum freshness of their products. In April 2022, Christo du Plessis joined Matorka as CEO, bringing with him extensive experience in land-based aquaculture ventures from both South Africa and Europe.
