PowerSchool

Founded in 1997, PowerSchool provides a suite of K-12 education technology (EdTech) solutions. The company’s portfolio has grown through acquisitions including a student information system, a student enrollment management system, the Unified Classroom suite of solutions, and college and career readiness and student-college matching platforms (“Naviance” and “Intersect,” respectively, acquired in February 2021). The Unified Classroom suite consists of a learning management system (“Schoology”, acquired in November 2019), an assessment tool (“Performance Matters”), a grading tool (“Pro Gradebook”), an advanced analytics tool (“Hoonuit”, acquired in October 2020), a special education programs tool, and a K-12 behavior management solution (“Kickboard,” acquired in November 2021). Additionally, the company offers an integrated finance and HR solution and talent management solutions for K-12 schools (“Unified Talent”) and higher education (“PeopleAdmin”, acquired in August 2018). More recently, in May 2022, the company acquired Canada-based Chalk.com, allowing it to integrate Chalk.com’s K-12 curriculum analytics platform. During the same month, the company announced that its employee management tool “Unified Talent” includes a framework for teaching to streamline educator evaluations. As of September 2022, the PowerSchool solutions supported more than 45 million students across more than 13,000 districts, schools, and other educational institutions in more than 90 countries.

In January 2023, the firm launched additional solutions for its PowerSchool Unified Classroom and PowerSchool Unified Insights products, including data-driven personalized learning offerings (“LearningNav” and “ContentNav”) and a new resource library within Unified Insights MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports Software). In March 2023, the company stated that it was developing localization features using its international framework for customers to use in their respective regions. In April 2024 , the company launched two AI-powered solutions, PowerBuddy for Learning and PowerBuddy for Assessment, designed to improve educator efficiency and student learning. 

In September 2023, PowerSchool acquired Neverskip, a Chennai-based enterprise resource planning software company for the education sector, with the aim of expanding its presence in India by targeting 1,000 schools and 2.5 million students in the next two to three years. 

In June 2024 , PowerSchool was acquired by Bain Capital, with it continuing to operate as a stand-alone company. 

Key customers and partnerships

In March 2021, PowerSchool formed a partnership with EAB, an education best practices firm, to exclusively sell, service, and support the Intersect platform. The partnership allows high school students using the Naviance platform, which connects to Intersect, to experience and evaluate colleges, and provides EAB’s higher education partners opportunities to showcase their institutions and connect with millions of high school students. In June 2023, the firm partnered with Stepwell, a web-based platform specializing in special education compliance and monitoring, to streamline monitoring and compliance processes for Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requirements. 

Funding and financials

For the full-year 2022 (FY2022), the company reported a revenue growth of 13% YoY to USD 630.7 million. For FY2023, revenue is expected to range from USD 688 million–USD 694 million and adjusted EBITDA is expected to range from USD 222 million–USD 227 million.
