Accel Robotics positions itself as a grab-and-go checkout solution for retailers. It uses a similar method in checkout stores as its competitors. The company develops both computer vision software and complementary hardware including sensors, cameras, and the necessary store equipment.
The startup claims it can build out entire modular stores for its customers and is largely focused on bringing small modular stores closer to where people live and work, as opposed to large-scale buildouts. It claims its technology is being deployed at a few restaurants and drugstore chains in North America and Japan, with plans to extend operations to corporate offices, university campuses, and military bases.
In May 2021, Accel Robotics announced the launch of an autonomous Valet Market located inside a high-rise residential building, Vantage Pointe, in San Diego, California. The 1,500 sq. ft. convenience store, which offers locally sourced items such as produce, baked goods, and dairy, will incorporate Accel Robotics’ automated checkout technology based on computer vision, cameras, and shelf sensors. The Valet Market will also offer delivery to Vantage Pointe residents. In December 2019, Accel Robotics raised USD 30 million in a Series A funding round led by SoftBank. The funding was expected to help Accel expand its global operations, increase manufacturing capacity and streamline deployment.
