Hydro Air Concept Energie (HACE) is a French company that develops technology for harnessing the power of ocean waves for electricity generation. The company’s patented process involves wave engines that consist of 12 m floating vertical columns. It uses the power of waves to compress the air inside the columns, which spins attached unidirectional turbines to produce non-intermittent electricity.
HACE is claimed to work with all types of waves (ranging from 10 cm to 3 m) and is resistant to extreme weather elements such as cyclonic or rogue waves. It can be installed either onshore, nearshore, or offshore.
According to the company, HACE’s low-cost energy production is able to produce electricity at less than EUR 0.02 per kWh and green hydrogen (via electrolysis) at a cost of EUR 0.6 per kg. The HACE system is also said to be the most carbon-free electricity generation method, with less than 0.5 grams of carbon emissions per kWh produced.
Funding and financials
As of April 2023, the company had raised a total of EUR 921,400 (~USD 1 million) in funding for the development of its technology via grants, crowdfunding, and private investors.
