inDrive is a global mobility platform offering on-demand ride-hailing and delivery services. It operates a unique bid-based model where passengers negotiate the fare for each ride with nearby drivers, who can accept, reject or counter the offer. The app has been downloaded over 175 million times and is currently available in 655 cities across 48 countries, making it the second most downloaded mobility app globally in 2022. inDrive prioritizes empowering both riders and drivers by providing transparency in pricing and the freedom of choice.
inDrive's bid-based model sets it apart from competitors like Uber and Lyft. Rather than predetermined fares, passengers input their desired pickup and drop-off locations and propose a fare. Nearby drivers can then either accept the offer, reject it, or counter with a different price. Once a driver accepts, the passenger can view details like the driver's rating and vehicle model before confirming the ride. This negotiation process typically takes 20-40 seconds.
For drivers, inDrive offers attractive incentives. The company charges a low commission of around 10% per ride, compared to 25-30% charged by major competitors. Additionally, inDrive does not charge any commission for the first six months a driver joins the platform in a new city, allowing them to earn 100% of the fare during this period.
The company was founded in 2012 in Siberia, Russia, by Arsen Tomsky. Initially launched as a social rebellion against surge pricing by taxi companies on New Year's Eve, it quickly grew into a successful business model. In 2018, inDrive relocated its headquarters to Silicon Valley and raised USD 150 million in funding in 2021, achieving a USD 1.23 billion valuation. However, the company fully separated from its Russian operations after the Ukraine invasion in 2022.
