Germany-based Bio-lutions produces sustainable packaging and disposable tableware from agricultural residue. The company’s primary manufacturing facility, located in India, sources raw materials such as sugarcane leaves, pineapple leaves, tomato leaves, and banana stems from local planters. The company’s patented process converts agricultural waste into micro and nano fibrillated natural fibers only with the use of water. Bio-lution’s products include sustainable packaging (to pack fruits, vegetables, and electronics), disposable plates and bowls, trays for surgical equipment, and bio-plastic foil for materials that require a waterproof surface.
In October 2020, Bio-lutions launched its second manufacturing facility in Schwedt, Germany, which is expected to employ over 200 staff and produce 1.5 billion units annually, once operational (mid-2021).
Funding and financials
In February 2021, the company raised EUR 2.7 million (USD 3.3 million) in a preliminary Series B funding round led by Delivery Hero SE and other existing investors. This is expected to be followed by another Series B round during the latter part of 2021. The funding will be directed at expanding the capacity of the manufacturing facility in Schwedt.
