Algreen is a British startup that develops bio-based plastics intended to replace fossil fuel-based plastics. The company combines biotechnology, chemistry, and material science to synthesize agricultural waste (including algae) and non-edible plant oils into a patented bio-derived polyurethane. The company focuses on developing solutions for the cosmetics, fashion, packaging, automotive, and medical industries. Algreen’s solutions for the fashion industry include fabric glue, apparel coating, shoe foam, and vegan leather and sequins. The company’s cosmetics offering is a polyurethane film former aimed at replacing microplastic ingredients in cosmetic formulations. Algreen also reports it has pioneered 100% bio-based polyurethane thermoplastics (TPU) made from natural biomass for automotive applications.
The company claims its fashion and cosmetics products are fully biodegradable, and had projected that it could achieve an 88 billion kg CO2 equivalent reduction annually by 2029 if it could replace 1% of the petroleum-based polyurethane market. The company was yet to commercialize its product as of April 2024.
