SunShare is a pioneering community solar company based in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 2011, SunShare designs, builds, and operates community solar gardens or farms across multiple states, primarily Colorado and Minnesota. These large-scale solar arrays allow residential customers, businesses, and non-profit organizations to benefit from solar energy without installing their own rooftop systems.
SunShare's business model involves constructing solar gardens on the outskirts of communities and partnering with local utilities to sell the generated solar power directly to subscribers. Customers who subscribe to SunShare's community solar gardens receive credits on their utility bills proportional to the amount of solar energy produced by their share of the garden.
The company started its operations in Colorado Springs, collaborating with Colorado Springs Utilities to develop its first two solar gardens. In 2013, SunShare relocated its headquarters to Denver and expanded its presence across Colorado's Front Range, working with Xcel Energy, the state's largest utility provider. Recognizing the favorable market conditions in Minnesota, where Xcel Energy is also a dominant player, SunShare established an office in Minneapolis in 2014.
By partnering with utilities, SunShare enables customers to transition to solar energy without upfront costs or the need for rooftop installations. The company has successfully developed and fully subscribed numerous community solar gardens across Colorado and Minnesota, making solar power accessible to a broad range of consumers.
In February 2015, SunShare entered into an agreement with NRG Energy to finance and construct five solar projects in the Denver and Colorado Springs metropolitan areas. As of January 2022, SunShare had built over 100 megawatts of community solar gardens across multiple states.
