Based in California, Upcycle & Co offers organic powdered fertilizer for applications in landscaping and home gardening. Upcycle offers three products: “Upcycle Active Fertilizer,” “Upcycle Active Algae,” and “Upcycle Active Biosolids.” The fertilizers are made using food waste, used beer grains, and other carbon-based organic waste. The company claims that its fertilizer increases microbial activity in soil by 200%, reduces water and fertilizer usage by 15% and 25%, respectively, and increases root size and root density by 18% and 5%, respectively. It also claims to reduce 11 lbs of carbon and green-house gas emission for every pound of Upcycle Active Fertilizer used, upto 45,000 lbs per acre.
As of June 2020, Upcycle had launched its product across 515 Target locations, offering one- and four-pound bags for home-gardeners and landscapers, and 50 and 2,000-pound sacks for commercial customers. It had secured a distribution agreement with one of the largest players in the landscaping industry (name undisclosed).
In 2020, the company stated plans to expand into the agricultural fertilizer market in the long term by introducing a water-soluble liquid fertilizer product to the market by Spring 2021 (no recent updates). The company has conducted trials at Fresno State University and claims that its product would be unique in terms of high nutrient, carbon, and organic-matter concentration compared to leading rival organic fertilizer products.
