Natural Fertilizers

 Enterra is a Canadian insect-based animal and bird feed company. In 2014, Enterra expanded its product portfolio to also produce granular natural fertilizers for both home and commercial usage. Enterra’s fertilizers are made from the dried “frass” (waste/manure) of black soldier fly larvae, which naturally processes the nutrients from organic matter such as pre-consumer food waste. 
 
 
 The company claims that its fertilizer has a 3% nitrogen, 1% phosphorus, and 3% potassium (3-1-3 NPK) macronutrient profile, a low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and contains slow release nitrogen for late season feeding. It is also water-soluble and can be used in hydroponics and fertigation applications. The fertilizer is also certified organic from the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). 
 
 
 In 2018, the company reported that its product sales had tripled annually and it was on track to complete 3 new processing facilities in Alberta (planned for 2019), British Columbia (planned for 2020), and Midwestern US (planned for 2021). Enterra began operations at the 188,000 sq ft Alberta facility in early 2021, which has a capacity to process up to 130 tons of food waste into 10 tons of high protein feed and upto 15,000 tons of organic fertilizer per day.

 Enterra's latest round of funding was in January 2021 where the company received USD 6 million in funding via Canada's AgriInnovate Program (an initiative from the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food) to expand production and to support the opening of the Alberta facility. Prior to that, in August 2018, the company raised an undisclosed amount in Series B funding, which supported the construction of three new processing facilities across Alberta, British Columbia, and Midwestern US.
