Mooncard

Based in France, Mooncard offers a business expense card issuing platform that enables companies to issue physical and virtual Visa cards to its employees with customized conditions and limits (with the ability to approve ad hoc expenses in real time). Users can make payments through the cards and must then take a photo of the receipt, add relevant details, and submit the expenses. The platform automates spend controls, approvals, and accounting while also generating expense reports and insights.

Accordingly, Mooncard can be integrated with several third-party ERP and accounting platforms such as Sage, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, and SAP. 

In addition to its standard cards, Mooncard offers “Mooncard Mobility” and “Mooncard Premium” cards. The Mobility card helps companies pay, manage, and track vehicle-related expenses and is commonly accepted at petrol stations, toll booths, car parks, etc. Meanwhile, the Premium card offers value-added benefits such as concierge services, premium insurance, and boosted miles.  

Key customers and partnerships 

Mooncard’s customer base has reportedly doubled from January 2021 to April 2023 and reached 6,000 companies, including Indigo, Vinci, and Air France.

The company partnered with airline loyalty program Flying Blue in January 2021 to offer Air France miles through its card (which can be used by employees for personal trips). This was reportedly the first non-Amex card in France that allowed users to earn miles.  

Funding and financials

Mooncard handled annual payments worth over EUR 200 million (~USD 220 million) through its platform as of April 2023, at which point the company had reportedly doubled its payment volumes every year since inception (in 2016). 

The company raised EUR 37 million (~USD 41 million) in Series C funding, co-led by Orange Ventures and Portage, in April 2023, to invest in developing new solutions and expanding its operations to six European markets (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands).
