CoapTech is a Baltimore-based medical device company that has developed the PUMA System, a new platform that enables ultrasound procedures within the hollow organs of the body. The company's flagship product, the PUMA-G System, is an FDA-cleared and CE-marked device for ultrasound gastrostomy tube placement in adults. It utilizes magnetically aligned catheters and external magnets to visualize tissue and organs in real-time during the procedure, eliminating the need for radiation exposure.
CoapTech's PUMA technology has expanded to include the PUMA-G Peds System for pediatric gastrostomy, the PUMA-G XL for patients with higher BMIs, and the PUMA-J for jejunum tube placement. The PUMA-J has received FDA approval for human studies at the University of Maryland Medical System.
A study conducted at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center in 2022 demonstrated that using the PUMA-G System reduced intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay by five and 8.7 days, respectively, compared to traditional methods. Additionally, total hospital costs were reduced by over USD 26,000 per patient when utilizing the PUMA-G System.
In April 2024, CoapTech announced that it had brought the manufacturing of the PUMA-G System entirely to Baltimore after previously outsourcing production to California. This move aligns with the company's goal of building its products locally.
