Ionic Materials

Ionic Materials (Ionic) has developed a solid polymer that conducts ions at room temperature. Ionic states that its proprietary solution not only beats other solid polymers (that are being developed) in terms of conductivity at all temperatures, but its conductive power also exceeds traditional liquid electrolytes across a range of temperatures (including at room temperature). 

Ionic’s highly conductive polymer allows higher energy density materials (such as lithium metal anodes and sulfur cathodes) to be incorporated into battery production, which could significantly improve battery performance. This is not possible with low-conductive solid polymers or liquid electrolytes. As of November 2023, the company was yet to commercialize its technology.

In July 2022, Ionic acquired iQLP, a supplier of LCP-based formulations for automotive, telecom, mobile, and semiconductor applications.

Key customers and partnerships

In September 2019, A123 Systems, a lithium-ion battery subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Wanxiang Group Corporation, announced that it was working with Ionic to bring a new solid-state battery to the market. 

In April 2023 , Ionic signed a joint development agreement with Doosan Corp, a South Korean multinational conglomerate, to develop advanced functional materials using liquid crystal polymers (LCP) that will enable the development of next-generation flexible copper clad laminates (FCCL).

Ionic’s most recent funding was in February 2018, when it raised USD 65 million in a Series C round.
