Vercel offers a platform for developers to develop and deploy front-end websites and applications serverlessly. It provides development tools alongside parallel computing capabilities in a serverless cloud environment to vertically integrate developer experience with final delivery. These tools include collaborative deployment solutions, frontend infrastructure, Next.js (an open-source REACT framework built in collaboration with Google and Meta), edge computing functions, and analytics. Users can reduce the development time of their projects using the Next.js framework, deploy with zero configuration to the Vercel edge network (which was available in 90 cities globally as of January 2023), and scale dynamically as needed. The company follows a subscription-based model and charges north of USD 20 per user per month (along with custom plans for enterprises).

The company has also taken steps to acquire other projects that have features that complement its product offering. In December 2021, it acquired Turborepo, a system for JavaScript and TypeScript that allows users to scale their codebases and reduce development time, for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition enabled Vercel to transition existing Turborepo customers to Vercel and make the company’s command line interface (CLI) open source. It subsequently acquired Splitbee, a data analytics platform in October 2022, for an undisclosed amount, to integrate Spiltbee’s features into its own analytics offering.

Key customers and partnerships

The company’s hosting and deployment solutions are used across several industries including e-commerce, travel, news, and marketing. Its prominent enterprise customers include large websites such as TikTok, Hulu, GitHub, Ticketmaster, and TripAdvisor. As of January 2023, Vercel’s Edge Network reportedly served over 33 million requests per week. In May 2023, Vercel partnered with Neon, a serverless Postgres database solution provider, to launch Vercel Postgres, a serverless SQL database solution for front-end applications. The partnership enabled developers to integrate serverless Postgres capabilities, as well as Next.js “App Router” and “Server Components” to funnel data from the SQL database into its low-latency web applications.
