Massachusetts-based Advanced Potash Technologies (APT) produces chloride-free potassium fertilizers (potash). The company mines potassium-rich feldspars (rock forming mineral) and converts it to fertilizer using its proprietary patented process. The company describes its technology as “accelerating the natural weathering process” and can be used to make a customized fertilizer product according to the requirements of the customer. APT’s product “HydroPotash” can be used as a direct application fertilizer for all types of farmers, including small-scale, large-scale, traditional, and organic farms.
The company reported in 2018 that it was exploring other value-adding solutions such as eliminating heavy metals in soil, combining its product with plant-growth bacteria, and mitigating run-off and volatilization (loss of nitrogen through ammonia gas) losses in nitrogen fertilizers. The company also reported that its fertilizer had performed well in greenhouse and field trials across different soils, crops, and climate conditions.
APT claims that its fertilizer promotes microbial activity and improves soil fertility and water holding capacity. It also increases plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and contains a slow release mechanism providing nutrients to plants throughout the entire growth cycle.
