Mastodon is a non-profit decentralized social network comprising independent servers that are organized around specific themes, topics, or interests. Users can join servers, follow others, engage in conversations, and perform similar activities that are typical of a social network like Twitter. Users need to first create an account on Mastodan.social and can then select their preferred server afterward by using the “Pick my own server” feature.
They can be hosted by individuals, groups, or organizations, each with their own set of rules for how members can sign up as well as their own moderation standards. Certain servers allow anyone to join it, while others are invite-only or require approval by an admin.
Key customers and partnerships
As of January 2023, Mastodon had roughly 1.8 million monthly active users.
