WildType is a startup developing cell-cultured seafood. In 2019, the company unveiled the world's first cell-based salmon delivered in minced form, followed by sushi-grade sliced salmon in September 2020. WildType uses a patented scaffolding technology for muscle and fat tissue cultivation and claims its salmon can be consumed raw or cooked. The startup plans to focus on restaurants initially and launch into retail outlets later.
In June 2021, WildType unveiled a new 7,700 sq ft cultivated seafood facility in San Francisco which houses the world’s first tasting room and an education center. The facility can annually produce over 200,000 pounds of seafood at full capacity.
Funding and financials
In February 2022 , WildType raised USD 100 million in Series B funding to support the commercialization of its cultured salmon while focusing on obtaining approval from the FDA and scaling up its operations to be cost-competitive. Further, in November 2022 the company received an investment of USD 7 million from SK Inc.–the investment arm of South Korea’s third-largest conglomerate SK Group.
