CommerceBear is a Toronto-based startup that provides an end-to-end ecommerce platform designed specifically for furniture manufacturers and wholesalers. Launched in 2019 by Sam Vlessing, who has first-hand experience working in his family's furniture business, CommerceBear aims to modernize the outdated furniture ecommerce market.
The company's platform enables furniture makers to build product listings, drive revenue, and manage their entire ecommerce operations through a single touchpoint. CommerceBear has developed "bear-ified listings" that help consumers easily identify reliable products when shopping online. The platform integrates with major marketplaces like Wayfair, Amazon, and Walmart, allowing furniture manufacturers to sell their products across multiple channels.
CommerceBear's technology addresses the unique challenges of selling and shipping bulky furniture items, which have different demands compared to traditional ecommerce businesses. The startup estimates the furniture and home industry market size to be around USD 800 billion USD as of December 2022, with most players still operating offline.
After experiencing a 300% increase in gross merchandise value on its platform in 2022, CommerceBear raised USD 14 million in seed funding in December 2022. The company plans to use these funds to expand into home categories beyond furniture and add more ecommerce platform integrations for its customers. Originally focused on North America, CommerceBear aims to eventually take its platform global.
