Zap Surgical Systems

ZAP Surgical Systems designs and manufactures the ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform, an advanced cranial radiosurgery system. The ZAP-X system utilizes a gyroscopic motion to direct radiation beams from hundreds of angles with sub-millimeter precision, allowing focused targeting of tumors while minimizing exposure to healthy brain tissue. It is the first and only dedicated radiosurgery platform to eliminate the need for radioactive Cobalt-60 sources, instead utilizing a modern linear accelerator to produce radiation.

A key feature of the ZAP-X system is its vault-free design, which typically eliminates the need for costly shielded treatment rooms. This reduces the complexities and costs associated with traditional radiosurgery systems.

The ZAP-X platform received FDA clearance in September 2017, Japanese Shonin clearance in April 2020, and CE Mark clearance in February 2021. 

Key customers and partnerships

ZAP Surgical Systems serves a diverse range of customers in the healthcare sector, including medical centers and hospitals. As of April 2023, the 1,000th patient had been treated with the ZAP-X platform. In March 2021, the first ZAP-X system was commissioned at the Miami Neuroscience Center at Larkin Community Hospital in Florida. In April 2022, Baptist Health South Florida used the ZAP-X platform for advanced brain tumor treatments at the Miami Neuroscience Institute and Miami Cancer Institute.

In October 2022, the University Hospital in Olsztyn, in collaboration with the University of Warmia and Mazury, became the first center in Poland and Eastern Europe to offer ZAP-X treatments. The European Radiosurgery Center Munich, a radiosurgery provider, initiated ZAP-X patient treatments in 2021 and has since treated over 300 patients (April 2023).
