PolicyMe, based in Canada, is a life insurance provider, offering its services via a mobile app and online portal. Its policies are distributed through D2C and B2B2C channels available to retail customers as well employee and membership groups. Customers can obtain details of policies and rates instantly by filling out a survey, and the company claims that in most cases, no medical tests are required to purchase its plans.

The company claims that its policies are generally priced 10%–20% lower than most traditional offerings, as it eliminates inefficient underwriting processes as well as distribution costs, with its policies starting at CAD 31.4 per month. In addition, couples receive 10% discounts off their premiums in the first year, while all policyholders receive free child coverage upto CAD 10,000. In addition, customers can contact PolicyMe’s network of non-commissioned advisors for help and suggestions.

PolicyMe launched a critical insurance illness offering in November 2022, covering 44 conditions (27 critical and 17 early stage conditions) that will complement its existing core term life insurance . The company claims to cover 10 to 15 more conditions than the average Canadian insurer and also announced plans to launch more products during the first half of 2023.

The company’s policies are underwritten by Canadian Premier Life, Manufacturers Life, Canada Protection Plan, BMO Life Assurance, and Wawanesa Life.

Funding and financials

In September 2022, PolicyMe announced that it raised CAD 18 million (USD 13.5 million) in Series A funding completed in tranches over the previous year, which consisted of both equity and debt financing. The round saw participation from new investors such as RGAX and SiriusPoint, as well as existing investors HCS Capital and Wetdate Properties. It had primarily geared the fresh funds towards the development of its product portfolio.

The company reported it had sold over CAD 5 million (USD 3.7 million) in life insurance coverage over 2018 to 2021, with 84% of customers being able to obtain policies without having to complete a medical exam.
