Tebrio is a Spanish biotechnology company specializing in the production and processing of the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). Founded in 2014 in Salamanca, Spain, by Adriana Casillas and Sabas de Diego, Tebrio has become a global leader in insect-based products. The company's main offerings include protein (Protein), fat (Lipids), fertilizer (Frass), and chitosan (Tosan) derived from mealworms. Tebrio's Protein product, designed for animal feed, contains over 72% protein and is highly digestible. The company's Lipids product serves as a feed supplement with over 75% unsaturated fats. Frass, an organic biofertilizer made from insect excrement, is marketed for both traditional and organic agriculture. Tosan, derived from the insect's exoskeleton, has various bioindustrial applications.
Tebrio is currently constructing an 80,000-square-meter facility in Salamanca, which is set to become the world's largest insect farm. This plant, scheduled for completion in 2024, aims to produce 100,000 tons of insect-derived products annually. The company's production model emphasizes sustainability, with a negative carbon footprint and a circular economy approach that generates no environmental waste. As of March 2022, 90% of Tebrio's gross revenue came from pet food and 10% from aquaculture, though the company expected aquaculture to become its main market once the new facilities were completed.
