Alto is a premium rideshare service that offers an "elevated" experience akin to a black car service. It was founded in 2018 with the goal of rethinking the gig-based model of companies like Uber and Lyft. Alto is the first rideshare provider to hire its drivers as W-2 employees who undergo rigorous background checks, fingerprinting, and training. The company also owns and manages its own fleet of luxury, midsize SUVs, including Buick Enclaves and VW Atlases.
Alto's vehicles are equipped with several features to enhance passenger comfort and safety, such as in-vehicle WiFi, HEPA air filters, plexiglass barriers, and phone chargers. Passengers can control the music, lighting, and temperature through the Alto app, and even set it to "Do Not Disturb" mode for a conversation-free ride. The vehicles are regularly cleaned and disinfected using EPA-registered sanitizers.
In addition to its core rideshare offering, Alto provides delivery and logistics services. The company currently operates in Dallas, Houston, Miami, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley. As of 2024, Alto has nearly 500 vehicles and around 2,000 drivers. It aims to transition to an all-electric fleet of over 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2024.
