Based in New York, AI SpaceFactory develops sustainable houses for Earth and space using 3D printing technology. Houses built for Earth, known as TERA, include sustainable features such as maximizing daylight and air circulation to reduce resource usage, energy-efficient lighting, and underfloor heating. The exterior shells of the houses are 3D printed with renewable and recyclable materials known as biopolymer basalt composite (a material made from crops such as corn and sugarcane), which is reported to be around 50% stronger and durable than concrete. Houses developed for the Mars habitat, known as MARSHA, use a different mixture of basalt fiber made from Martian rock and bioplastic, which is used for 3D printing.
In May 2019, SpaceFactory won the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) 3D-printed habitat challenge, receiving USD 500,000.
