Fantuan was founded in Canada in 2014 with the launch of a Chinese-language delivery app, to cater to the Chinese community in the region, such as international students, immigrants and Chinese office workers. The company has now transformed into an online delivery platform specializing in Asian food, serving around 1.2 million users in 40 cities across North America including Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston. It is reportedly planning expansion into Australia and Europe. In 2021 the company launched an English language version of its delivery app, to boost its exposure/order volumes in North America, following an expansion drive across the region in 2020. It has partnered with over 10,000 restaurants, and has a team of more than 8,700 couriers as of September 2021. Fantuan has also expanded the services provided via its app from food delivery to grocery and convenience store delivery, errand services, and online reviews. The company also provides marketing services for new restaurants prior to opening, and designs promotions/ads for restaurants planning to launch online.
In January 2024, Fantuan acquired the delivery segment of Chowbus, a provider of SaaS and point of sales (POS) solutions for restaurants. Following the acquisition, Fantuan and Chowbus plan to forge a strategic partnership to bolster their strengths and resources.
